On Tuesday, January 10, 2017, Chief Nnia Nwodo, emerged the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Nwodo won with 242 votes to beat his closest contender, Prof Chiweyite Ejike who got 13 votes.

The new Ohanaeze leader is not a newcomer to the political sphere. Here are some facts about him many do not know:
1. Early life
Nnia Nwodo was born on December 11, 1952, he is the third son in the family of Nwodo in Ukehe, Igbo Etiti L.G.A, Enugu state, Nigeria. He spent most of his early life in Enugu state.
2. Education
He had his primary education at St Patrick’s School, Iva Valley, Enugu - 1957-1960, from there he moved to the Holy Ghost Primary School, Enugu from 1961-1962 and finally St. Mary’s School, Uwani, Enugu in 1963.
For his secondary education, he attended College of Immaculate Conception, Enugu from 1964 to 1970, where he got his WASSCE.
3. Further education
Thereafter, he gained admission into the University of Ibadan, Jos Campus from 1971-1972 and University of Ibadan, Ibadan from 1972-1976.
He left for the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London from 1984-1987, heading back for a mandatory stint at Nigeria Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, in 1988.
4. Career
He was a research assistant, Federal Cabinet Office Lagos -1975. Then he served as the general manager of his family business Chief J.U. Nwodo & Sons Ltd in 1978.
Venturing into politics, he became the state secretary, National Party of Nigeria, Anambra state branch from 1978-1980.
He became the special assistant to the president of Nigeria on information from 1980-1981, Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Special Duties from 1981-1983 and minister for civil aviation in 1983.
5. Leaving politics and back
Leaving politics for a little while, he went back to his famiy business as a partner in Dr. J.N. Nwodo & Co. from 1989-1992. Then he found his way into the banking sector as the chairman, Urban Development Bank of Nigeria Plc. in 1993.
He was also part time Lecturer in Constitutional Law- Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) from 1996-1999.
He became the Honourable Minister for Information and Culture from 1998 to 1999 and he is the chairman, Enugu state Centenary Committee June 2009 till date.
6. Family
He is married to Hon Justice Regina Obiageli Nwodo of the Federal Court of Appeal, Lagos, and they have five children together.
