Nigerian Army dismisses new Boko Haram video but urged Nigerians to be vigilant
- The Army spokesman Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman says the video is mere propaganda
- He reiterates that the Army has captured Sambisa Forest and there is no cause for alarm
The Nigerian Army has dismissed a new video released on Thursday, December 29, by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau as mere propaganda.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Army spokesman Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman said the attention of the Nigerian Army is drawn to a video clip released by Boko Haram from an undisclosed location a while ago, showing its purported leader, making spurious claims.
He said: “While effort is on-going to subject the video for further forensic analysis, the Nigerian Army wishes to reiterate that it has captured and occupied the last known stronghold of the terrorists group in the Sambisa forest.
“We would like to reassure the public that this video is nothing but mere terrorists propaganda aimed at creating fear in the mind of people and to remain relevant.”
He added: “Therefore, there is no cause for alarm, more so as concerted effort in clearing the vestiges of Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be hiding is still on-going.”
According to him, troops deployed in various parts of the north east have continued to intensify search for all persons associated with Boko Haram with a view to bring them to justice.
Usman also enjoined the public to go about their normal lawful business, remain vigilant, be security conscious and report any suspicious person or group of persons to security agencies.
Recall that on Saturday, December 24, President Muhammadu Buhari announced that the Nigerian military had succeeded in liberating Sambisa forest, one of Boko Haram’s hideout.
Four days later, the Nigerian Army briefed journalists in Maiduguri, Borno state capital about the way the military outfit led other armed forces to take over what is now known as Camp Zero, Boko Haram's stronghold in Sambisa forest.
But in a swift response, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appeared in a new video today, December 29, to deny claims that the insurgent group has been crushed and flushed out of its Sambisa forest stronghold.
