Teodorin Obiang Nguema, Vice President and President’s son, on trial in France

Equatorial Guinea’s flamboyant vice-president has gone trial in absentia in France on charges of corruption after he failed to stop the landmark case.
Teodorin Obiang Nguema is accused of buying a mansion and sports cars in France with a fortune amassed from oil-rich Equatorial Guinea’s public funds.

A lawyer for Mr Obiang, the president’s son, denies he is a “big-time bandit”.
The trial is the first since France started investigating African leaders accused of illegally acquiring wealth.
It comes after a nearly decade-long campaign by anti-corruption groups demanding that France act against leaders suspected of stashing their “ill-gotten gains” in Europe.
Mr Obiang’s six-storey Paris villa, estimated to be worth more than $100m (£80m), is located on Avenue Foch, in one the most prestigious neighbourhoods of the French capital.

It boasts a cinema, spa, hair salon and taps covered in gold leaf, AFP news agency reports.
The West African state’s government launched a bid at the International Court of Justice to prevent the trial from going ahead, arguing Mr Obiang had diplomatic immunity.
The United Nations’ court turned down the request last month.
In November, Swiss authorities seized 11 cars belonging to Mr Obiang, accusing him of money-laundering.
Among them was reportedly a Porsche valued at more than $830,000 and a Bugatti Veyron which sells for $2m.

In 2014, Mr Obiang agreed to surrender a Malibu mansion, a Ferrari and Michael Jackson memorabilia as part of a settlement with US authorities.
The US had filed claims against his US-based assets worth more than $70m, alleging they were proceeds of corruption.
Equatorial Guinea, a small country on the west coast of Africa, struck oil in 1995 but most of its population still lives in poverty.
Its President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, is Africa’s longest serving leader.
He seized power in 1979, and promoted his son to the post of vice-president in 2012.
Mr Obiang has always said that “he earned the money legally in his country,” Mr Marsigny told AFP.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir member quits, refuses to sing for Trump

The Mormon Tabernacle choir
At the request of the U.S. Presidential Inauguration Committee, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has accepted an invitation to sing at the swearing-in ceremony during the presidential inauguration at the Capitol in January in Washington, D.C. The inauguration ceremony for President-elect Donald J. Trump and Vice President-elect Michael R. Pence is scheduled for January 20, 2017.
Trump will take the oath of office as the 45th president of the United States. The inaugural committee has announced The Rockettes, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and 16-year-old “America’s Got Talent” star Jackie Evancho.
The church announced on its website Thursday that the 360-member volunteer choir will sing at Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

In 1965, the Mormon Tabernacle choir sang for President Lyndon B Jonhson’s inauguration
The group has performed at a handful of other presidential inaugurals, including those of presidents George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush and
The new development
Jan Chamberlin, a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, is quitting the group and saying that she could never sing for Trump.
She sent a resignation letter to the choir president this week.
“I’ve tried to tell myself that it will be all right and that I can continue in good conscience before God and man,” Chamberlin wrote in a Facebook post. “I only know I could never ‘throw roses to Hitler.’ And I certainly could never sing for him.”
Chamberlin said she has concerns about the choir’s reputation after performing at the inauguration.
“Looking from the outside in, it will appear that Choir is endorsing tyranny and fascism by singing for this man,” she wrote.
“Tyranny is now on our doorstep; it has been sneaking its way into our lives through stealth. Now it will burst into our homes through storm,” Chamberlin added.
The choir did not return a request for comment. Boris Epshteyn, a spokesman for Trump’s inaugural festivities, simply said, “We’re honored to have the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform in the 58th Inauguration, their sixth time participating in inaugural ceremonies, and we look forward to their uplifting performance.”
Phoebe Pearl, a dancer with the Rockettes, reportedly had previously protested on Instagram about the group being chosen to perform at the event. Her post has since been deleted.
The Madison Square Garden Company, which operates the Rockettes, previously said the dancers would not be compelled, by MSG or their union, to perform at this month’s inaugural festivities.
The committee for Trump’s inauguration has not yet publicized any major celebrities performing at the event — a change from the past two events.

The Tribune reports that, the presidency announced that the Federal Government has begun the payment.

Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed that the implementation of the programme was part of the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s determined efforts to touch the lives of Nigerians positively.
“Funds for the commencement of the payments in four states were released last week to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) – the platform that hosts and validates payments for all government’s social intervention programmes. Funds for another set of five states to complete the first batch of nine states would follow soon,” he revealed.
The statement said beneficiaries in Borno, Kwara and Bauchi states have started receiving the money under the first batch, which also includes Cross Rivers, Niger, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun and Ekiti states.
The nine pilot states were reportedly chosen because they have existing social registers that successfully identified the most vulnerable and poorest Nigerians through a tried and tested community based targeting (CBT) method working with the World Bank.
“Those states are featured in the first batch, with the added inclusion of Borno State where a validated list of IDPS was compiled in addition to the Social Register, which is expected to go round the country.
“Working with the World Bank, the CBT process has now been adopted for developing the Social Register in the other states around the country, for transparency, objectivity and credibility in the selection of the poorest and most vulnerable beneficiaries for the programme,” the statement read.
The statement, also revealed that the sequence for the payment of the money would be operationally managed by NIBSS.
In a similar vein, the FG has started the payment of N30,000 monthly stipends for beneficiaries of the N-Power scheme, the job creation programme of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Laolu Akande, the senior special assistant, media and publicity, office of the vice-president, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, December 30, stating that: “all successfully verified beneficiaries who have provided bank accounts are being processed for payment’’.
According to him “some beneficiaries will receive their first stipends on December 30.’’

I almost left Chelsea Fc- Diego Costa

Diego Costa
Diego Costa reveals how close he came to leaving Chelsea in the summer

Costa has scored 14 Premier League goals this season
When Antonio Conte embraced Diego Costa at the final whistle on Saturday, sharing a joke and a laugh together, he might have wondered how differently this season could have gone. When Conte arrived in July, Costa wanted to go back to Atletico Madrid and he admitted on Saturday that he was “about to leave” before the move fell through.

Six months on, Costa has 14 Premier League goals and is likely to finish the season with the Golden Boot, as well as his second Premier League title. He is certainly going to out-do the 20 he scored on his way to the 2014-15 title. With all due respect to Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero, Costa is the best striker in the country right now.
The fact that Chelsea did not sell Costa and buy back Romelu Lukaku, as they had initially hoped to, now looks either far-sighted or fortunate.
Costa revealed on Saturday just how close he had come to ending his time here, because of the family pull of returning back to Madrid.
“I had the possibility to go to Atletico,” Costa said, “because of a few things, family, the life I have there. I wanted to change for family reasons. Not because of Chelsea, because there is a lot of love with the supporters here, so I’m very happy. I was about to leave. But it wasn’t to be. I continue to be happy here, I’m very content.”
Costa said that the trust he feels from Conte has been a big part of his revival as a player. “It was important, too, that the manager, from the very minute, said he counted on me,” Costa said. It is true that Conte has worked very hard on Costa, getting him fitter and more focused, but the biggest improvement has come from within Costa himself.
After picking up four yellow cards at the start of the season, the fact that Costa survived so long before receiving a fifth speaks volumes to his improved disciplinary record, and his ability to resist provocation. Costa has always felt more sinned against than sinning but he does at least now know how to channel his passion in the right way, and how to avoid getting booked.
“I thought about it, and knew I had to improve that aspect, because, here in the Premier League, the reality is there’s no mercy,” Costa said. “A lot of the time it seemed like they were against me. There was no other way, because if they’re not going to change, I had to change.”
The result is a player who looks happier, sharper and better now than he has done at any point in his two and a half years at Chelsea. His improvement mirrors the improvement of the whole team, and it is remarkable just how quickly things have changed after just half of a season under Conte.
Costa spoke of the intense personal loyalty that the players already feel towards Conte, a bond that is clear every time he runs onto the pitch to do his post-match victory hugs. Neither Conte nor Costa revealed what their shared joke was after Saturday’s game, but the connection between the two men was obvious.
“The truth is that the manager is good with the players, always making jokes with us,” Costa said. “That is good for us, to have a manager who is not just a boss but like a person we can talk with, someone whose support we can count on in difficult moments. He is calm with the players and you can see the people love him more all the time.”
Conte loves Costa too, and understandably so, given that his goals are going to win Chelsea the title. Costa was better than ever on Saturday, scoring a brilliant goal five minutes from the end to cap a majestic performance. In the first half he nearly scored a goal reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp, taking the ball out of the air and shifting backwards into a shooting position only to be blocked by Lee Grant.
Everyone knows that Costa is a good player, but Conte spoke afterwards of how his bubbly personality helps to lift the whole team. “Diego is a good guy and for him it is important to joke,” Conte said. “But when it is the moment to work, he works. He is a Brazilian. He is always happy and he wants to show this. For us it is very important because when you have this type of player keeping the atmosphere always electric, with good positivity.”
That positive atmosphere is both the symptom and cause of Chelsea’s amazing run, and the reason why Costa says their efforts are being rewarded. “If you work hard and there’s not a good atmosphere, the work doesn’t mean a thing,” Costa said. “You can run 20km, 80km or 100km, and if there’s no spirit between the players, the coaches, as colleagues, it won’t come out as well.”

Gay Activist Bisi Alimi Blast Nigeria Celebrities for Begging For Money When Sick

Bisi Alimi
Bisi Alimi is a gay right activist and he has called on Nigerian celebrities to drop the habit of begging for money whenever they fall ill. Alimi, who stated this on Saturday via his Instagram page said the act was “shameful”.
In his wrote:
“This morning I woke up thinking about the evolving shameful pattern of #Nigeria celebrities begging ordinary Nigerians for help when they are sick. This month alone, I have come across about 3 this month. This act of begging represents the bigger picture of what needs to change in Nigeria.
I mean in a country of 180m people, is that not one single person has come up with the idea of providing health insurance for celebrities?
Or these celebs are just so stupid and blinded by their fame and thought that it will last forever and hence failed to plan for their future? Or is there an issue of trust that, Nigerians as people has failed to trust each other enough to trust an insurance company with their money? What happened to celebrities networks? Why can’t these people help each other out? Why always begging the poor ordinary people for money? The same thing the pastors do 365 days of every year.
This has to stop, as a people and a nation we can’t continue to allow this bullshit to continue, it is shameful just like the project call Nigeria.
